Line return formatting

Dave K

I've set up a template that I use often. I've changed my
default font in the normal.dot, and everything is as it
should be, except in certain places in the document - when
I try to insert a new line, Word changes the font to
something different (I believe its the font that I was
using oringinally) - I can't get it turned off. Its
interesting that it only happens in certain sections.
Wish reveal codes would show formatting codes too (not
sure it would help, but it'd be nice). I've looked at
styles, but that doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions?

Hi Dave

I suspect that Word is trying to be its over-helpful self.

Try Tools > AutoCorrect and click the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Un-tick everything there unless you are absolutely certain of what
it does, and you're certain that you need it. Certainly un-tick "Define styles based on your formatting".

Hope this helps.

Dave,

There are several ways that one could interpret your comment "... when I try
to insert a new line...". One interpretation leads me to think of another
possibility, namely that there is an instruction associated with your style
that brings a new style (in your case, one with a different font) when you
press the Enter key.

If this might be the problem, try this: with your insertion point in the
paragraph with the "correct" font, choose Format menu -> Style -> "Modify"
button -> look at what's in the "Style for following paragraph" pop-down
menu. If it isn't the same style, look up the characteristics of the style
shown to see what's different -- or just nominate the same style in this
menu.

In practice, this can be a useful feature. For example, I have a style for
inserting blue-coloured comments that look very different from the font in
my body text. I've set this style so that as soon as I've finished typing
the comment and I press the Enter key to resume typing the body text, the
style changes to the body text font.

Cheers,

for you to back up your Normal template and all your Word settings (to a
medium other than your hard drive)?
