Line separating footnote from main body of text

Can anyone tell me what happened to the horizontal line which in 2004 used to separate the footnote section from the main body of text? Will this line (re)appear when the document is printed?

Thanks for responding. I am using Word 2008, version 12.0.0. Unfortunately, in this version of Word, there is no "Normal View" as recommended in the article which you linked to, hence there is no way to "reset" the divider line. It's all very mysterious, the line is rather ephemeral; it will appear for a minute or two, then vanish.

Weird. Normal View has been renamed Draft View in Word 2008, so go to
View | Draft and then return to the instructions in the articles.

I'm not seeing issues with that in Word 2008 here.

Well, you must be thanked in rather grand fashion – thank you very much. Now, if only I could cause this to become a default state of things, generally; that is, when I open up any old documents, I have to do as you say, go to Draft View, then back to Print View (which is what I prefer to work in).

You're the best – thanks

Glad to help.

Are you seeing the problem in brand new documents? If so, that is more
likely to be fixable easily.

Hi John:

Follow Daiya's instructions, but do it in your Normal.dotm template (add one
footnote so you can do it).

All other documents must be closed when you edit Normal.dotm (otherwise, you
may get some very entertaining side-effects...)

Then save Normal.dotm and Quit Word (to force it to save what you just did).

Every new document you create should now have the footnote separator to your
personal taste.

Cheers

Thank you John. This seems to have solved the issue, and I thank you inviolably for this. Thanks also to Daiya for her help.
