line spacing + default font

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

when i write a line and then press enter it leaves an extra space between lines and i have to go to format-paragraph and set the line spacing to 0 (it is 10 by default all the time). can it be done automatically ? so i wouldn't have to set it manually each time i run word

secondly, how can i set a default font when i sart word ? it is cambria by default. can i change it ?

also, each time i run word and then trying to save file, it suggests to save the file in documents folder. can that be change as well automatically ? i always want to save it to desktop

thanks

Word is a Styles-based word processing program & in the 2008 release the 10
pt Before paragraph spacing is built into the default (Normal) style. More
detail& how to change it can be found here:

This is also controlled by the default paragraph Style (Normal) used in
Word. You can change this - as well as anything else about the Normal
paragraph style through the Modify dialog when you change the paragraph
spacing. Another way to make the change is in Format> Font, choose your
preferred font specs, click the Default button.

I understand your initial impulse & inclination to make the changes, but
before doing so I'd suggest you become familiar with the use of Styles as
well as some of the font & paragraph formatting features that often go
unlearned. They enable you to better control your document flow &
formatting, avoid many of the pitfalls associated with direct formatting,
and simplify your formatting tasks.

If you are - or intend to become - a serious user of Word you will benefit
greatly from the Clive Huggan article which you can download from here:

Your default directory can be specified from Word> Preferences> [Personal
Settings]> File Locations. Again - as a suggestion - I'd reconsider "always"
saving directly to the Desktop. Although you certainly aren't *required* to
save to the Documents Folder, saving to the Desktop isn't recommended in
either Windows or Mac OS. Create *Folders* to store your documents in an
organizational pattern that works for you. If you prefer you can create a
folder on the Desktop, set it as your Default folder, then move your work to
other folders later. Many, however, find it more efficient to save directly
to the appropriate folder from the Save/Save As dialog while they work
rather than having to move things around later.

You're certainly welcome, but the thanks goes to those who came along far
before I did :) I just pointed you in the direction of their generosity.
