Line spacing in Notebook view

A

aitch

When i type in Notebook view, every line of type comes out on the
middle of the blue line instead of between the lines. I have tried
changing the format of the lines and the type but it doesn't make any
difference. I know i could change it so i don't see the lines, but
first i wanted to see whether any of you helpful people know how i can
fix it.

I just want to type between the lines in the same way that i would
write between the lines with a pen in a notebook.

Thanks,
Aitch

hi--

If I change to 20pt, I see this. Also, it doesn't align very well when
the text is double-spaced.

What font, what font size, what's the line spacing, and what exact
version of Word and OS are you running?

Does this happen in all documents or just 1 or 2? What if you create a
brand new document in Notebook Layout?

Can you quit Word, hold down shift as you relaunch it, and tell us
whether the problem still exists?

I don't use the Notebook much, so this is just a quick analysis, but it
appears that in Notebook View you have two settings that influence this:
Font Size and Distance. This second setting is part of the Rule Lines
section of the Formatting Palette.

If the Distance value is set to anything *less* than 125% of the Font Size
the problem will occur. It doesn't appear that the Distance value is tied to
the Font Size - IOW, changing font size doesn't increase/decrease Distance,
it has to be adjusted directly.

Also, when in that view there doesn't seem to be any other way to control
Line Spacing - there is no access to Paragraph Formatting features at all...
I assume this is because "notes" are not considered something to be entered
(_typically_) in para form.

Daiya,

I'm running Word 2004 11.3 on Mac OS 10.3.9. I relaunched holding
Shift as you suggested and sure enough on opening a new doc in
Notebook Layout, the words fell between the lines as i wanted. So
thank you for that! I tried in various different fonts: American
Typewriter, Arial, Verdana.

If i then change the distance to, say, 16, it goes wrong again. But
that's ok. I just won't do that.

Thanks to you and CyberTaz for your input. I'm interested in why this
layout has so many limitations. I started using it after giving up on
a program called Notebook because it wasn't quite right and much of
what i needed seemed to be available in Word. But i have now realised
that each page is a tab and each tab is a page - i can't have a tab
that goes on for several pages. And that's disappointing and nothing
like a 'real' tabbed notebook IRL. Well, that's another discussion.

Hello Again, Aitch -

<snip>
I'm interested in why this layout has so many limitations.
<snip>

Keep in mind that this is the "first incarnation" of Notebook View. I don't
pretend to have any idea whether it will even be retained in 2008, but if it
is I'm certain it will incorporate a number of new features/improvements :)

But i have now realised that each page is a tab and each tab is a page - i
can't have a tab that goes on for several pages.
<snip>

Not true - simply keep typing at the bottom of the "page" and the page in
that tab/section will continue to scroll on and on for as far as you wish.
IOW, each Tab (section) can contain as may pages as necessary based on
volume of content. I think you're looking for separately displayed
"flipable" pages & that ain't gonna happen. Nor do you see any visible
indication of Page Breaks while you're in Notebook Layout [pity] other than
on the Status Bar... But *pages* aren't a part of Word's file structure in
the first place.

Yes, i realised after i posted that it sounded like i didn't know
that!

Yes, i have seen it in an app called Notebook and i liked it. I want
to write long notes and series of notes under each topic / tab. It
probably shouldn't matter whether it looks like one page or three...
but it does to me.

I guess this is all about the difference between seeing page breaks
and not. It's about knowing where one is in the document as if it were
a hard copy.
