line spacing in word 2004

Hi!

First off, first time here. Second, I did search for my "subject
heading," read that post, but wasn't about to figure it all out. Here's
what it said:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group...018126?q=line+spacing&rnum=9#ce7ce4aeba018126

I find that in Word 2004 (AFTER and maybe before 10.4), line spacing is
wider, not as narrow as before. How can I change this? It is set to
smallest line space as is, at least from the format menu.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric-

AFAIK Word uses default single line spacing based on the typesetting
algorithm for 'leading', which is 120% of the (largest) font size on a line.
This has been the standard for years going back even to manual typewriters.
The difference is that on typewriters we were 'conditioned' to think only in
terms of single, 1-1/2, and double line spacing because the device produced
only one font size. Even then, single spaced technically translated to 120%
of the font size of the typewriter.

Scaleable fonts give you far more flexibility within the software that
allows for adjusting the line spacing to virtually anything you want. As far
as:
It is set to smallest line space as is, at least from the format menu.

No, it isn't. Its set to Single, and if you change your font size from 10 to
48, it will still read as Single unless you change it. However, the _amount_
of space will be significantly greater. That's what keeps the descenders (y,
p) on one line from conflicting with the ascenders (f, t, etc & any
capitals) on the line below.

Type in a value equal to your font size and see how the line spacing
tightens up. Better yet, type in a point size a few points smaller than the
font size and see how it affects readability.

Be all this as it may, your perception may very well be valid. But the
difference in appearance, if any, probably has very little to specifically
with Word.
