Line spacing problem

I have a document that I am trying to edit that come from someone outside
the organization.

The line spacing needs to be single line. It looks double spaced on the
document. When I highlight the text and go to format/paragraph/
linespacing/ it shows single.
The problem is that it is not single .... it is at least double spaced and
it won';t let me change it to single.

HELP!!!!

Could you tell me what the manual line breaks will do for me?

Grace,

A manual line break is kind of like a carriage return on
an old typewriter. It moves the text down a line but
doesn't start a new paragraph. For visual demonstation,
if you have Word set to automatically capitalize the first
word of a sentence, type the following "Now is the time
(enter) for all good men. The "f" will autocapitalize
because the (enter) started a new paragraph. Do the say
thing except use (shift+enter) which insert a line break.
Line breaks come in handy for entering addresses, poetry,
etc.

after trying the demonstation that Greg suggested, try
turning ON and OFF the paragraph markers. You will notice
that you can see manual line breaks, hard breaks, etc.
direct on your monitor when ON, which enables you to also
delete them. This can be a real time-saver for being able
to see what kind of formatting is actually happening in a
paragraph.
