Line spacing

I have inserted a symbol generated by MathType into a Word sentence. The
height of the constructed symbol is slightly greater than a normal capital
letter. However, although the symbol should fit into the normal line spacing
(single), Word has increased the spacing between the line with the equation
and the one above it. How can I force the spacing to be the normal
single-spacing?

You can't force it to be "normal" as long as you use Single spacing. You
must select Exactly spacing and set a line height that will approximate that
of Single for the given font size.
