Line up text across columns

I have a document with a table containing 4 columns. I want to add text across all four columns that lines up. At the moment each column works independantly. Is it possible to enter text in say column 1 and have text in column 4 line up with the entry in column 1? To achieve this at the moment I have had to place multiple returns in each column, but this doesn't really work very well

Thanks

Hi, Andy,

When you want text to align in separate columns, that's the signal
that you should be using a table, not column formatting. At each
alignment point, you start a new row of the table.

There really is no reliable way of aligning separate columns when you
use the Format > Columns feature (sometimes called "newspaper columns"
or "snaking columns").

Hi

Try selecting the entire table and then Right click on the table, then from
the context menu select "Cell Alignment". Experiment with these setting. Also
check that the paragraph formatting you are using in each row is the same.
Say you have different space before setting in each cell then they're never
going to line up. Lastly, if none of that has fixed it, it's just possible
that the cell margins have been changed Table>Table Properties>Cell>Options.

HTH + Cheers - Peter
