lines and overlay circles in Word

I'm writing a student workbook and have a need to do two
things that I haven't been able to figure out:

1) write paragraphs with some sentences underlined as
well as leaving blank underlined areas for student writing
in the same paragraph

2) create a Venn Diagram by overlaying a circle on top of
another circle. When I do this, it eliminates the line
that creates the intersecting portion that I need.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which Word version are you using? I am not sure about version prior to
2002(XP), but 2002 has a diagramming utility that includes Venn diagrams.
The command button is on the Insert menu by default.

If you don't and if it isn't available in previous versions you can create
reasonably good Venn diagrams by using the drawing tools. I assume by your
question that you have draw two circle of similar size and place one over
the other. If this assumption is accurate, all that is left to do is add
color. Apply a light color (e.g., yellow to the back circle) then apply a
dark color (e.g., black or gray to the top circle). To bring the border of
the back circle through and see a coloring effect in the overlapping area,
all you need to do is apply a transparency effect to the top circle. Of
course you can experiment with color combinations to find an effect you
like.

AFAIK there is no easy (maybe no way at all) to apply a direct third color
to the intersecting area.

Thank you, Greg. I'll be trying the colors for my Venn.
I don't know if the Word 97 has the diagramming utility,
but I'll try to find out.

Suzanne,
Thank you for the site for lines. It will take some
experimenting, but I'm sure I'll come up with a
satisfactory solution to my problem there.

As for the Venn diagrams, since I'm using a Word 97
program, I think the No Fill will be the way I go.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Suzanne. You've solved my problem with the Venn
and now I'm working on the lines, but I expect to be able
to get them working soon.
