Link a Visio shape to a word/paragraph in Word, like a footnote?

Let's say I have a Visio drawing with three objects. I want to label them
figure 1, 2 and 3 and then describe them in a word document and refer to them
in the word document using something like word foot or end notes. Does this
make sense? Can it be done? What version of Visio would I need?

you can use the hyperlinks in visio to link to documents and bookmarks. I
know it works at v2003 and suspect it works back at v2002.
