Link Bar - can't add bookmark - right "mode?"

Hi,

I can't add bookmarks to the link bar. (Frontpage 2002, Windows 98SE.)

Insert -> Navigation -> Bar with custom links
In "link bar properties" -> Add link -> Place in this document
I get the error message "Internal hyperlinks are disabled in this mode"

I can add links to local and external files OK.

What is the correct "mode?"

I found the same question answered back in 2002. The person said the
page had to be opened within a Web. I don't know if that worked as
there was no reply. Anyway, I do have a Web open.

I can manually change the links with a seperate editor after Frontpage
generates the full source (to add the "#[bookmark] at the end of the
URL), and these links work properly. I don't see why Frontpage won't
accept them. Doing it manually means I have to edit all the links
every time I update the page with Frontpage.

When you diagram your site in Navigation view, the Navigation view nodes
represent *whole* pages. Therefore, Link Bar components are built to address
the top of the page only (no bookmarks).

If need more flexibility than the Navigation View / Link Bar / Themes
paradigm provides, then use a different toolset.

I don't know what you mean. (I'm new to Frontpage.) I don't see
"toolset" in the help index, or a menu option to change it. I have not
selected a theme.

The option to select a bookmark is there, so it must work somehow.
When searching for an answer to this I found many messages where people
were putting bookmarks in link bars with no problem.

Jim used the term "toolset" as a generic term.

Even though you are not using Themes the Link Bar uses some elements of them to create the Nav buttons.

You can just add a hyper link below the area used by the Link Bar although not part of it...you can also use more than one link bar.

FrontPage Link Bar components don't support the use of bookmarks.

The "mode" in which the Add To Link Bar or Modify Link dialog box *permits*
bookmarks is the mode where some other part of FrontPage has called the same
dialog box. (I know, it's odd that they display that message rather than
suppressing or dimming the Place In This Document button but oh well.)

Interactive Button components can create nice-looking buttons that link to
bookmark locations. Try those.

I was having the same trouble -- "internal hyperlinks disabled in this mode".
It's nice to know that it does not work ("place in this document" should be
dimmed). I tried using the interactive buttons as a workaround (as you
sugest). Unfortunatley, the presence of the interactive buttons causes the
pop-up security warnings when the web site is opened in IE with the default
settings which tends to scare some users away.

Users will not see the warning message when the site is view from a web server (http), only when you
view the site on your pc from a disk-based location.

Hmm, are you sure? I published the site with one interactive button (as a
test) -- the security warning popped up when I went to the site (from a
different computer, even). I removed the interactive button, re-published, no
security warning.

I don't have that problem under Windows XP SP-2 with any JavaScript running from a http location.

Personally, I avoid using any JavaScript mouseover image as hyperlinks.
