Link Bar Problem

C

Charles

I have the same problem as many with the link bar (navigation.) It looks
great on my computer but once I upload it I see only text links. I contacted
my web host and they are using FP 2002 extensions. I saw in a post someone
mentioning FP 2002 SE extensions. The web host never heard of the SE
extensions but did assure me of the FP2002 extensions.

I am in the process of deleting the extensions and reinstalling the
extensions through the automated system of my webhost. From there I plan to
publish my site overwriting all files on the server. I hope this works.

I do use FP to upload my files and always have. Is there something else I
can try if this does not work?

C

Charles

The SE part now is claified. The webhost does have FP 2002 extensions
installed. The part of the SE is an error on my part somewhat in the way I
asked the webhost. I am so used to cars having SE, LX, RX model names and the
junky windows names having the ME and XP after their name- that SE went over
my head.

So at least I know now that my host have the latest server editions (for you
computer enthusiats- FP 2002 SE.)

Is there a solution? I have yet to see a working solution for the Link Bar
problem with Frontpage 2003. My host does have the FP 2002 server extensions.

C

Charles

I had Frontpage 2002 server extensions reinstalled and I have copied the
entire website from my computer to the server through Frontpage. Same
problem. The Link Bar does not have the images.

Here is a link to my website that has the Link Bar. It is the links on the
left side and it should be Deep Blue theme for the Link Bar.
http://www.yellowecho.com/travel/deathvalley.htm

This is my webhost:
www.hostway.com

Here is my plan:
http://hostway.com/smb/webhosting/gold/windows_webhosting.html

If someone has any ideas or solutions please let know. Also if you have a
webhost that you use. I would like to hear about it- please only give webhost
suggestions if you use Frontpage 2003 and Link Bars and know for a fact it
works on their service. I do like my webhost but like my Link Bars more.

Please explain what you mean by "copied the entire website..." as you would use FP File Menu |
Publish Site command.

I clicked on the Remote Web Site tab so the local web site and the remote
website panes showed on each side. I published all files from my hard drive
overwriting pages already on the destination (www.yellowecho.com.) I did this
after my webhost reinstalled the Frontpage 2002 server extensions.

I did this because this was a suggestion from another post I read- to start
fresh. But this did not work. The Link Bar still shows text links and not the
graphics- this case being the Deep Blue theme. The Link Bar looks as expected
on my computer when previewing the local copy on my hard drive. It is when
the page gets published to the web when the Link Bar changes to text links.

I do have shared borders turned on. However the Link Bar is not used in the
Shared Border.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Try this...

Open the live/remote site directly in FP and run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks and see if that
helps.

Ok will try...... No it did not work.

I read in another post: "My situation may be different, but, I solved the
issue of missing navigation by changing the Link Bar style to an html type of
link."

How would I do that- change the Link Bar Style to an html type link?

Also I have been reading and see that the link bar graphics are in the
_derived folder. It is a hidden folder. How come Frontpage shows other
folders like _themes but not _derived. I see the folder when I use windows
explorer on my hard drive. I also see the files.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

There are some folder that FP keeps hidden because us users are not suppose to message with any of
the files within those folders.

As far as changing the link bar to html type link would be to wait for someone else that really
works with link bars to response or manual create your text navigation on a new page and then use
the FP Include Page component to insert the page into all other pages.

Thanks Tom for your help. I have been hitting F5 like crazy over the past 5
minutes. It sounds like I want to have Link Bars as it much easier.

For an experiment I deleted the _derived folder from my local copy (hard
drive) and then went into Frontpage to and clicked Recaluate Hyperlinks...
It remade the folder and placed all files back into the folder. Interesting.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

That just means that if you were to change any of them, FP would overwrite them at some point.

You are attempting to use custom link bars w/ a custom theme (S-Theme="DeepBlue 0110) vs your default theme copy-of-tm-pulse-2 001
That requires FP 2002+ and a host running the FP 2002 Server Extensions
- Use the DeepBlue 0110 as your default theme

FYI
Your theme tag is invalid as:
<meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="copy-of-tm-pulse-2 001, copy-of-tm-pulse-2 0001">
it should be
<meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="copy-of-tm-pulse-2 001,default>

new question: I have added FP 2003 upgrade and opened my website on my
computer, using the MS temlate Financial Theme.

the link bars did not come up as I had expected, and when I added them
manually to several pages, and published to web, I now have 2 sets of link
bars. Looks like one in the side frame as chosen and 1 is part of the 'theme'
frame atop. When I try to delete the top link bar all graphics in the theme
disappear. T esid ebar doesnt delete. help for non programmer.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

FP navigation components are not meant to be used with a framed based site.

perhpas i phrased it incorrectly. Im just using the template from 2002, the
Financial theme, and it appears to have a top section and left side section.
I just want to know how to undo the added link bars without deleting all the
theme content.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

In the top shared border area of your page, click and select the navigation component, then delete
it.

Sorry Im not following. Don't follow "navigation component". The only way I
can edit the top section is through the file 'topnav' and it has no link
provisions.
If I click on say the home page - 'index' - nothing appears related to
navigation to change.
Sorry if im missing the point.
Also, whats the easiest way to save a copy of a site to experiment with?
Thansk.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

1. Publish to another location on your HD, will give you a copy.

2. On your index page you indicated that you see navigation across the top, this would be the FP
navigation component and on the left you have inserted a Link Bar, this is also a FP navigation
component. Click on the one in the top you page, should select it, then hit your delete key. This
will remove it from all pages using the top shared border, which is how theme implement the
navigation component on all pages within a web.

1) a theme just controls the appearance of the pages
2) your navigation view and link bars use the theme to decide how to display the link bars
Use View Navigation to see what pages are in your nav view and to add pages (drag a new page from Folder List)
3) the top and left "nav bars" are probably part of shared borders (same for all pages)
Use Format Shared Borders to select which one show
Then in any of your pages right click the nav bar to select which nav bar properties are going to be used (which level of pages are
to show)
