Link caption in fig number and table number in text

Hello word comm up there

I'm writing a paper in Microsoft Word 2003. I have figures and tables that
I'm inserting in the text. I also inserted a caption for each figure or
table.
I would like to link the caption (figure or table) with the figure o table
I'm pointing out in the text. Thus, if I have to add another figure or table
in the text, MS Word will reorder the caption number in the text as well.

I have been checking the word help and the web with no success. Could you
help me with this matter?

Many thanks

Insert | Reference | Cross-Reference... --> Figure / Table

When you add another figure / table and caption it, Word will automatically
renumber the other captions to suit (although you may have to update the
fields to for the renumbering to take effect). Updating the cross-reference
fields should automatically reflect the changes to the caption numbering.

Thanks

Yes, when I add another figure or table word automatically renumber. I refer
the number of the figure or the number of the table in the text (not linked
with the caption).

My problem is that as I said I don't know how to link the number of the
figure or the table in the text with the caption in a way that can
renumbered automatically in the text as well. For example I have a Fig 1.,
and in the text I refer to as Fig. 1, but in the text is not renumbered
automaticaly if I add another one.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

The information in my previous post will achieve the desired result. Simply
insert a cross-reference to the figure or table in the text, and when another
figure or table is added and captioned, the cross-refence will update
accordingly - although you may have to update the fields in the document to
see the change.

See the Word help topics on cross-references and fields for more information.
