Is it possible to take an existing sharepoint site, link it to project server
and have it function as if it was created by project server?

Jason:

You can connect Project Server to any WSS site once you have run WSSWIZ.exe
against the site to add the Project Server specific customizations. Keep in
mind that running the wizard may have negative impacts on a site that
already has had content posted or customization.

The scenario is this. A regular Sharepoint site (using the team site
template) is created to allow collaboration on a specific topic (let's say
the R&D group discussing a new product). Content is added to the site
(documents, discussions, lists, events in a calendar, etc.). Through this
effort, the group has a general idea of what the new product should be, and
figure they are ready to map out a "project plan" in Microsoft Project. A
project is created in Project Server, but the corresponding Sharepoint site
is new and has no content. I want the R&D Sharepoint site that already has
content to become the Project Sharepoint site for the new project.

Can "WSSWIZ.exe" do this?

Jason:

I don't think this will work, but I encourage you to try it if you have an
appropriate test system. I can think of two scenarios to solve your problem:
1) Shift the paradigm; instead of creating SP sites ahead of the Project
Plan, implement a process to create a placeholder project plan as a means of
initiating a new potential project site in SharePoint. This is my
recommendation as it closes the loop, and adds a marker in your portfolio
that signals that a new project may be emerging. Theoretically, your early
development work should be part of your formal project process. 2) Another
alternative would be to cross-link the two sites.
