Link "other" audio files to one note pages

One note should allow a way to drag/drop audio files in and allow them to
play back on an audio player. THe problem is that it opens the audio file
and plays after linking it, but then the file is playing from an unknown
program. I can't stop it, pause it, or anything.

The feature should either have the file open in Windows media (or respective
program) or in the 1note audio record/play feature. Right now it does
neither and my computer is running an hour long lecture that I can't stop or
rewind or anything.

Hello Leah,

If you are using OneNote 2003, there is not much you can do. You may want to
set Windows Media Player or another program as the default to handle
particular audio files. Media Player lets you stop or paus the audio.

In OneNote 2007 Beta 2 you can drag audio files onto a page (wav, mp3, wma,
wmv) and then double-clicking the file will play via OneNote UI, such that
you can use the toolbar to stop, pause, or fast-forward the audio. There is
also a way to play the file in an audio player. If you right-click the file
and click Open (instead of Play), the file will be played in an application
that is registered in your system to play files of that type (e.g. Windows
Media Player, etc.)

Thanks for the response. Just to know that I am understanding correctly.
1. The file embedded into ON will not play in any program other than this
mystery one until I get ON 2007? If so, that means even if I set Windows
Media as my default player, clicking the link from ON will not play in
Windows Media?
2. Once I have ON 2007, then I can right click and select open? Because I
just tried that and it doesn't work in 2003. (Just want to confirm).

That's all... thanks for responding so I know I am not crazy and I am glad
to hear this is already in the works for the next version!

Thanks
Leah

Hi Leah,

For #1, it depends on the mystery program. You can try going to Media Player
and somewhere in its options find the list of file types that it takes over
by default. Theoretically that should help and clicking on the link in ON
should make the file play in Media player. However the mystery program my be
written in such a way that it takes over the files anyway.

For #2, Yes you are correct. ON 2003 does not have the Open functionality.
For OneNote 2007, I made a mistake: the behvior is that the file will play in
OneNote by default and if you want to play it in another player, you can
right-click the file and click Save As - as a separate file outside of
OneNote so that you can play it like all other files.
