link problem

Hello,
Using Office XP (2002) We have a user that has word documents that
contain links to excel files his laptop developed a problem and we had to
give him a replacement It is the same vendor/model...... all we did is add
his account to the machine and since he is a roamer ( and the machine has all
the same exact applications) he was back up and running in a very quick
fashion....... but now on this "new" laptop none of his links in his word
files work anymore. The first thing that we see is that as soon as you
launch one of these word files you get a message indicating this file has
links and would you like tp update them ? Which he never saw this message
on his 1st laptop......and if you say yes....you see a progresss incator that
indicates the file is being updated.......... but then when you click on the
embedded Excel link....expecting the excel spreadsheet to open...we are
getting an error stating the file is corrupt or no longer available
............ so we go back to his original laptop and all still works
fine......
is there a setting in word that we may have to set to permit all this to
work again ??
thanks

Hi =?Utf-8?B?RGFuIERlQ291cnNleQ==?=,

One issue might be a security update that no longer allows links to be updated
"silently". That would explain the prompt you're seeing

Update

The unavailability sounds like an outside application (such as Norton Antivirus)
is interfering with OLE between applications.

I have read the Microsoft Document....unless I am missing something...it
just tells you this is how it behaves after you apply the update...there is
no mention on how you get back to what used to be "normal operation" ( I.E.
not being asked each and every time I guess this is what you refer to as
"silent mode" ? ) it that still possible ?

Isn't there a section about setting a key in the Registry?
