It's a mdb file with link to tables in a separate mdb file.
I'd tried the relink method but still have the unrecoverable error.

Is there any issue on link table with Access XP? We couldn't open any link
table in a database and always ended with an unrecovable error and Access
had to close itself.
By "link table" you mean a link to a table in a separate .mdb file? or
an external table of some other type?
I'm not aware of any newly introduced limitation on linked tables, and
all my applications use them without incident. I suspect that either
your current database may be corrupt, or the links need to be
refreshed. Try Tools... Database Utilities... Linked Table Manager to
relink the tables, or if need be delete all the links and use File...
Get External Data... Link to create fresh new links.
