Link to an existing sharepoint site

Can we link a project to an external sharepoint site and how?

Can the users get to sharepoint site directly without going thru PWA?

Would the users still require Project Server CAL, even if they access
the sharepoint site directly?

Thanks.

Here are my replies:

a. By connecting to 'external sharepoint' site if you meant outside of your
organization, then its not possible as I know of.

Check Project server installation guide & check Sharepoint chapters.

b. Yes user can get to sharepoint site directly. They have to type the URL
of the site.

c. If the users just access Sharepoint sites (don't access Project at all)
then they don't need project CAL.

a. No; the intent is not to access any site external to the
organization.

The organization has several production sharepoint instances. As part
of project server installation, the team created a sharepoint instance
in project server box. So, the sharepoint sites for all the projects
are created under this instance.

The users have already created sharepoint sites in production
sharepoint instance. Now that project server is also installed, they
now want the ability to link to the site they have already created.

Is it acceptable to change the setting "* Create a site under this
SharePoint URL:" to any production instance? If so, based on my
understanding, all the projects sharepoint sites will have to use the
same instance. In other words, all projects have to share the same
sharepoint instance. Is my understanding correct?

2) Does project server store any information about the linked
sharepoint instance in the database, even though WSS resides on a
different box?

Even if project server database contains some info about the linked
sharepoint, I would assume that we don't have to be concerned about any
SQL DB CALs for project server database, as the users would be
accessing sharepoint directly?

Thanks.

1. You can use sharepoint sites hosted on other servers.

Your understood is correctly.

You can't use sites created on other instanace. Project sites use special
workspace template.

What you can do is provision instance on other box with Project workspace
using project setup. Once project sites are created on new instance, you can
move list/documents from your manually created sites to the proper sites on
new instance you created above.

Go through Sharepoint chapters in Project installation & admin guides.

2. msp_web_STS_servers stores the information on the instance of sharepoint
used by Project server. And msp_web_projects stores the project STS site name.

As for SQL CALs for project DB is concerned, you've to check with the company.

The reason that user community wants to use the existing sharepoint
sites is to make use of pre-defined template in the production instance
of sharepoint. Is there any way that project server's workspace
template can be customized further.
