link to Word from visio

T

Terri.Galante

I am trying to link a shape in Visio to a Word document.

I use Hyperlink > Local File, and link to the word.doc.

I save the Visio as an html page. When I am in the Visio html and attempt
to link to the word document, I get an error that shows Visio was looking for
a path to the document I am in already - not the Word doc it should be
looking for.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks very much.

This sounds like a known problem with relative hyperlinks in Visio's HTML
output (I'm assuming you have Visio 2003). One way to work around it is to
position the Visio file (.vsd), the target Word .doc, and the HTML output
file in certain locations in the folder hierarchy before you set up the
hyperlink and save the file as .htm. For instance, the folder structure
below should work. (As a shorthand, I'll call the Visio drawing "Visio.vsd",
the target Word .doc "Word.doc" and the HTML output "Visio.htm", and I'll
call the folders "Level1" and "Level2", but you can name them whatever you
want.)

C:\Level1\Level2\Visio.vsd

C:\Level1\Visio.htm

C:\Level1\Word.doc

In other words, save the Visio .vsd one level lower in the hierarchy than
the target Word .doc. Re-create the hyperlink to the Word doc in this
location and then re-save the drawing as .htm into the same folder as the
target Word .doc.

Other workarounds:

- Uncheck the "Organize supporting files in a folder" option in the Save As
Web Page dialog box. Of course, this means all the files that go with the
..htm output page will be loose in the same location as the .htm file instead
of in a folder.

- Uncheck the "Use relative path for hyperlink" option in the Hyperlinks
dialog box. But this isn't a good idea if you intend to move the HTML page
to a different machine.
