Linked and unlinked menu bars in Navigation View

I have several pages, whose relationship is structured in Navigation View.
Each page uses navigation bars (also visible as grey rectangles in Navigation
View). The bars work fine, but are not 'visualy' linked to any of the actual
pages in the Navigation View.

I just discovered that the Navigation bar can be visually linked to to the
webpage in Navigation View. What's the significance or use of that? Thanks.
