I recently installed Word 2002 for XP. Since then,
graphics that are both linked and embedded (Insert menu:
Picture > From File > Insert & Link) do not update when
the image is changed and I press F9 or use Edit > Links >
Update Now.

Have you clicked on the linked graphic and pressed F9 to manually update it
after changing the source file?

Yes, I am clicking the graphic and pressing F9. I have
also tried Edit > Links > (select graphic) and click
Update Now. This does not work either.

Hi Margaret,

If you use Alt+F9 to toggle between the graphic display
and the field code when in Print=>Layout what is
the content of the field code of a graphic that will
not update? Between the {brace} characters?

What is the graphic file format and app you are using?
(I'm assuming you're replacing the same file with a
newer version on save from another app?

Does this happen in a brand new document as well as
in the problem one?

Yes, they are all "inline" and it shows up in the list of
Edit > Links. It does not update with the "Update Now"
selection either. >>

The expanded field looks like this:

{ INCLUDEPICTURE "Graphics/Polysurface-003.png" \*
MERGEFORMAT }

PNG, and yes i'm replacing the same file with a newer
version.
Does this happen in a brand new document as well as
in the problem one?

I created a new document to experiment with this, and
guess what. Everything works as expected in the new
document.

Here's the clincher on this one - after making it work in
the new document (same Word session), it now works in the
old document as well. This is a stumper. But at least now
it's working, and I might be able to keep it working.
Maybe eventually I'll figure out what is causing the
problem.

Now I just have to figure out how to keep the images from
resizing when I do a "Save pictures in document"
and "Break links."

Hi Margaret,

Hmmm and with the graphic selected using F9
doesn't update to the newer version? As it's
not happening in a new document this one may
be corrupted. You may want to try saving it
as a web page in Word or as RTF, closing Word
then reopening the file to see if it works.
Here are a couple of other things to check:

The only 'surprise' is that the field is
showing a forward slash rather than a double backslash
after the foldername.

Is this graphic stored on a file or on a website.

What is the build version of Word from Help=>About

If you change
Graphics/Polysurface-003.png
to
Graphics\\Polysurface-003.png
does the F9 update work?

Is Track changes turned on? (this one came up in
another thread today, so just to be sure <g>).

On the resizing, in what way are the graphics
resizing when you break the links (what wrapping
are you using and what view are you in).

It looks like saving to .RTF has fixed the problem. About
half of my images resized doing this operation, but this
is a relatively small document for me (30 pages instead of
500), so I just fixed them. I am suspecting corruption now
caused by the previous crashing. I believe this was mostly
caused by an older version of Adobe PDF Maker.

I forgot to give my Word build number before:
Word 2002 (10.4524.4219) SP-2.
