Linked Excel Files - Shared Server

I am having problems with linked files when using a shared server in
our office.
The problem is that our team share a lot of excel files and we need to
link them to other excel files to keep traceability of where the data
is coming from.

If i have a file open and there is a link to another file within in
it, i see the link within the cell coming up as:
'L:\Finance\2011\[Dec month end]Total NI'!$Q$27
When it comes up like this, and i open this link, my figures will
automatically update. However if another user has been in my original
file and saved the file that is being linked to, the link will come up
as:
'\\fs09edx\grpareas\'L:\Finance\2011\[Dec month end]Total NI'!$Q$27

While this file name is still correct (the additional piece is the
server name), when this happens, and i try to open this link, it says
that the link cannot not be found. Whilst it still looks like it knows
what file it should be linking to, the change at the start of the path
breaks the link so that even if you open the file, it will not
automatically update the numbers. What we then need to do is go to
edit, links, change source and select the original file. Once this is
done the link is restored and our numbers update. This is really
timeconsuming and leaves room for things not being updated. I have
done a bit of research on this but am coming up blank. Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated!
