linked Excel locked by another user?

I have Excel 2000 linked to Access 2000. The queries I need to run are all
read-only and append data to another Access table. I don't modify any Excel
data. Is there a way to go ahead and run them even if Excel is opened by
another user? Right now I get a warning that it is open and can't continue.
