Linked spreadsheet in Word 2003 but different when opened with 200

Some of our computers are still running 2003 and some are running 2007 office
suite. The 2003 users are using the compatibility pack.

We link data created in Excel 2003 into Word 2003 documents. When a 2007
user opens a Word 2003 document, the spreadsheet links will go to a
completely different workbook that the one created in the 2003 doc. When a
2003 user opens the word doc after the 2007 user, the incorrect links remain.

We have had 2 incidences of this now so I am looking for help.

Has anyone else had this happen, and if so, what is the work around until
such time as all the computers have been upgraded to 2007?

thx.

Hi lorrwill,

In all likelihood, the path to the Excel file on the PC running Word 2003 is different from the path on the PC running Word 2007.

Yes. That is the problem. However what I need to know is how to avoid/correct
this. Why would 2007 fail to recognize or alter the path?

Hi lorrwill,

Unless your situation is suitable for using the relative paths approach outlined at: http://www.wopr.com/index.php?showtopic=670027,
your only option is to configure both systems so that the filepath is the same - all the way from the drive letter to the source
file.

I am not seeing how this is applicable at all.

I have mapped drives in my network. If person A has a workbook and links
with their mapping and then person B that doesn't have the same mapped drive
configuration opens it up, the spreadsheet freaks out.

Ensure that the mappings of all of the workstations are the same, ensure
that the users attach the linkages from the proper mapped locations. So if
person A goes in via I:\ ensure that person B goes in via I:\
