Linked spreadsheet version problem

I am trying to link to a Excell 2003 spreadsheet with Access 2000 ..
getting the message from the Link Spreadsheet Wizard: "The wizard is
unable to access info in the file .... Please check that the file
exists and is in the correct format." I can open the spreadsheet with
Excell 2000, save it and the problem goes away, but for other reasons I
don't need to do this permanently. I have also tried to link to the
spreadsheet with Access 2003 and get the same error. Also tried to
save the spreadsheet as another version with Excell 2003, but didn't
seem to work. Thanks in advance for your help..
