Linked Table

I have a table in my database that is linked to a large database located on
a server, this linked table is constantly being updated from some other
software application - which in turn gives me live up to date data. My
Problem is that my database application is running extremely slow due to the
amount of network traffic and my update and append queries used to up date
my tables in case of the server database being unavailable. Can any one give
me any tips or tricks to speed the process up, or using linked table
efficently ??
