Linked tables and conversion from Access 2k to Access 97

I just noticed that when I convert a file from Access 2k to Access 97 and I
have linked tables in the file to a Access97 backend, the new Access 97 file
has "imported" not linked the tables.

What is going on here?

Is there a setting hiding under the covers that will allow me to do the
conversion and maintain the table links?
