Lee,
The simple answer is "yes" but the experienced recommendation is, don't
do it. Why? Because links between applications, particularly in remote
locations, (i.e. not in the same directory on the same PC workstation),
is just asking for corruption.

What exactly are you trying to do? By that I mean, what is your end
goal? WIth a better understanding perhaps we can suggest a viable
approach.

Hi John!

I'm trying to find out if a user who is on the same server can link a cell
to an MS Project file that might be found at a different url (but on the same
server). How can this be done? The reason I'm asking (How) is because my
superior wants me to explain (How) it can be done.

Linking for us might be neccessary due to size, the number of individual
projects that depend on each other. If we can't link, we may not be able to
see the true critical path etc.

What is the best way to address this issue.

I'm very, very interested in any alternatiive solutions that you may have!

Thanks!

Hi John!

Can you explain how the curruption might take place?

Can links be made with lines in multiple MS Project files?

Thank you so much for your help!

Lee,
It sounds like you need Project Server. It is designed to work in a
collaborative environment across an enterprise. I don't do Server myself
but you should be able to get a whole lot of helpful information by
posting to our sister newsgroup, microsoft.public.project.server.

Linking between applications is normally done with paste links (i.e. OLE
type links). In Project setting up a paste link is accomplished via
Edit/Paste Special. The problem with paste links is that they are very
fragile. Various operations by users, moving files around, not saving
properly, poor file maintenance, etc., can lead to corruption. Fragility
of OLE links is increased when linked files are in different folders.

Hope this helps.

Lee,
I looks like you're still in a bit of a hurry :)

Good luck with Project.
