Linking a jpg causes error can't read communication interrupted

When trying to insert (linked) a jpg file in an Access 2003 form I get an
error message "Microsoft Office Access can't read the OLE object because
communication was interrupted" I am not on a network. The pictures are in a
folder on this computer. Thanks for the help.
