Linking a Large SQL Table Using ODBC

I've linked a large SQL table but when I open it I get an ODBC -- call failed
message. I am able to view it if I create an Access project file and connect
to the data using it.

I'd prefer using ODBC because it seems more user friendly for the typical
users. Is there a way to improve the connection using ODBC?

The machine is Windows XP Professional and it is Access 2002.
