Linking Data Labels to Cells

E

Ellen

I found instructions from Microsoft on how to link chart
data labels to worksheet cells. They say to select the
series you want to format, select the "Format" menu,
then "Selected Data Series" and then the "Data Labels"
tab. Then it says to select the "Automatic text" check
box. The problem is I don't see an "Automatic Text" check
box anywhere on the data labels tab.

Does anyone know how to do this?

right-click in the chart
select "source data"
in the "name" box, select the cell that has the name of the data label you
want
click "OK"

That's the Name of the series. Ellen asked for labels for each data point.

The Automatic Text checkbox only appears if you have selected one of the default
options for the labels, then manually changed one of the labels so it no longer
refers to the selected option. Checking Automatic Text changes the label back to the
selected option. I don't know what it has to do with linking cell text to data labels.

Unless you just want the X or Y data as labels, the easiest way to apply cell
contents to data labels is to use one of the following third party Excel add-ins.
They are free to download, easy to install, and easy to use.
