Iv got four projects inserted into one and I want to link them, but the same
row numbers are given to each project. How can I do this?

Trevor,
Using a master file is probably the easiest way to establish links
between tasks in different subprojects. Select the first task and then
the second task (or even multiple tasks). Then hit the little chain link
(link tasks) icon on the standard toolbar. If the tasks are physically
separated (i.e. requires scrolling), you could create a quick filter,
(Project/Filtered For/More Filters), to only display the tasks to be
linked. Then select and link them.

Hope this helps.

Thanks John,

I was able to show a link, but the successor did not move, even though it
was asap. is there a way to do this in the individual projects as opposed to
the master ?

It is possible there are other predecessors driving the task so your
"external" predecessor is not currently in play. In P2007, you can use the
Task Drivers pane to see what is going on. In P2003 (and earlier),
Window/Split... In the bottom pane, you will see predecessors, double click
on them one at a time to see the finsih dates and learn which one is driving
you.

Just as a note: Looking at the predecessors for external tasks, you will see
the complete path to the project file and its specific line number.

If you have only one predecessor and it did not move and your successor is
ASAP, try pressing F9 to recalculate.

Trevor,
You're welcome. It looks like Jim provided info about why the successor
may not have moved.

To answer your other question, as Jim said, external links show the
complete path in the Predecessor field. You could type that in manually
at the individual file level, but that is prone to error and is more
labor intensive.
