Linking Excel workbooks

I have Excell workbooks stored in aSharePoint document
library. I check out the documents, then select edit in
Excel. Once both are open I establish the links. The
documents are then saved back to SharePoint. On opening
the documents the link routing appears correct but the
links do not work.

When both documents are open Excel does not recognize the
fact since the total link rout is maintained and nothing
works.
Any suggestions?
