Linking Fields

I have a menu box taking values from an Access Database. I want to be able
to automatically update other fields in my form from the same database. For
example; a staff member selects a student from the menu list and two other
fields; Home Group and Core Teacher are automatically updated.

I have tried setting rules in the properties dialog of the menu list but not
successfully. The rules allow me to manipulate fields but not individual
records. Am I missing the bleeding obvious?
