linking for Visual FoxPro tables

M

margaret

Good morning!

I am attempting to either link or import visual FoxPro tables into Access XP
on a Windows XP computer. I have attempted to update the ODBC driver as
suggested in an earlier posting from Albert kallal and Cindy Winegarden. And
I'm still getting the External table is not in expected format.

Any suggestions.

Hi Margaret,

Do you know which version of FoxPro your tables were created with? Since
VFP7 new data features have been added to FoxPro tables and they aren't
ODBC-compatible. (However, if tables created with VFP7 and above don't use
any of the new data features then they will be ODBC compatible.

All versions of FoxPro tables are accessible via OLE DB and ADO. The latest
FoxPro and Visual FoxPro OLE DB data provider is downloadable from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/downloads/updates .

The tables are created in VP 6.0. We are hoping to upgrade to the latest and
greatest this year.

I went out to the website you suggested and it does not list Version 6.0.

Any other help?

Hi Margaret,

The VFP ODBC driver works with all FoxPro tables created with VFP6 and
below, as well as tables from higher versions that don't have any of the new
data features. The VFP OLE DB data provider works with all versions of
FoxPro tables.

Is there a DBC file present in the directory where the tables (DBFs) are? If
a table "belongs" to a Database Container (DBC) then the file header is a
little different. You will need to point your connection string to the DBC
file, not just to the directory where the DBFs reside.

There is not an DBC file present so when I configured the drive I selected
"Free Table Directory". I did this under the System DSN.

Hi Margaret,

It's hard to tell what's wrong. If you want to zip up a small table that
doesn't work and send it to my address below I'll be happy to look at it.

Margaret sent me a table and here's what I replied to her via email:

I do not have any problems accessing this table via Access or Excel (2003)
with the latest VFP ODBC driver, 6.01.8629.01. All I can think of to tell
you is to reinstall your ODBC drivers, and try moving the tables to a
different directory.

I've seen others post with this problem and there were never any good
answers. Sorry I can't help more.
