linking front to back end

hello experts,

I have 3 machines all on XP and working in Office (Access) 2000. The db has
a front end and back end.

I am trying to set up the db where it sits on machine#1. Then machines #2
and #3 can enter information from the front end and save it to the back end
(machine #1).

This is what I have done so far:

I have put the backend on machine #1.
I have put a copy of the front end on machine #2 and #3.
I have mapped the front-end machines (2 & 3) to the drive/folder/file of the
backend sitting in machine #1.
I have created the icon to the program on the front end machines ready for
them users' to click them and enter their data into the form.

I think I am ok so far. What I just need to do now is "link" the front end
machines to the mapped backend. I'm sure it's something fairly simple, but
I'm stuck on how to do it. I'm searching the Access help files, but haven't
found the answer yet.

Any help from you experts out there is greatly appreciated.

Hi again,

Ok,, here's what I tried (pardon my typing.. I broke my finger yesterday and
it's been an ordeal... LOL). Anyway... I went in to my FRONT END machine (#2)
and from there, found the backend db. In there, I clicked on File>Get
External Data>Link Tables.

I then selected all the tables in the backend db I needed. It "looked" like
it did something. But.. then, when I clicked the icon, it still says:
"Cannot find file C:\Documents and Settings\Users\mydatabase.mdb.

I must have something all messed up (shall I start crying now or wait a bit)?

There is a checkbox at the bottom that you need to check if you want to
change the location of the external tables,

Well, I've been sitting here trying to figure this out and have had no luck.
I've gone through and tried the Link Table Manager, the Get External
Data>Link Tables and the like and came up with nothing. I still get the same
response of "Cannot find file C:\Documents and Settings\Users\MyDatabase.mdb.

I just don't get it. I thought I was on the right track with the front end,
back end and then mapping. I simply can't link the front end to the back end.

Well that is job one. You cannot think about modifying the front end file
if you cannot even open it.

Correct. The links are in the front end, not the back end.

IF you can figure out how to open the front end then you use the Linked
Table Manager. If you do not check the CheckBox labelled "Always prompt for
a new location" then the linked table manager just refreshes the existing
links using the existing back end file(s). If you check that box then you
are prompted for the location to use instead of the current one.

The linked table manager works from the FRONTEND, not the backend.

Try opening the frontend, holding down the Shift key to bypass any startup
code. What (if anything) do you see in the Tables window?

You say you got an error that it was unable to find file
C:\Documents and Settings\Users\mydatabase.mdb. Is this the location and name
of the frontend, or of the backend? or WAS it at one point?

Thank you both for your magnificent input! With the help from Mr. Rick and
the "shift key" tip I was able to make it work!

You fellows have no idea how wonderful this is and what an accomplishment
