Linking Pictures

When I link pictures to the database, the size of the
database is still massive. It seems like it is embedding
rather than linking. My properties are set to only allow
linking. When I use Microsoft Photo Editor as my default
program, the database is very large, it allows me to view
pictures in the forms without double-clicking on the
picture and I am able to print them on reports. When I
use another picture software, the size shrinks, I now
have to double-click in the forms to view a picture and
my reports show the path to the pictures, not the picture
itself. I have read up on pictures and it seems like it
should be very simple. What am I doing wrong?
