Linking (Read-only) to another table

Is there a way to create a read-only link to a table?

I need to use data from a table in another database, but do not want my
database to be able to update the other database?

or should the table just be imported? Is there a way to do this
programmatically
so that the imported table is automatically updated (whenever my databse
is opened)?

Any help or thoughts are appreciated.
