Linking tables in Access 2002 causes computer to freeze

My database works beautifully, until I try to separate the tables from the
application. When I try that, I get the error "Cannot find file_app.mdb (or
one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that
all required libraries are available." when I open the database.

A bit more detail:
The database was developed in Access 2000, I have Access 2002 on my computer.
I'm running Win 98SE.
My computer is old -- 650 MHZ Processor, 384MB Ram.

Any ideas?
