linking tasks between projects

I'm linking multiple tasks between projects. I have found that when I link a task the corresponding task from the other project is inserted above the task being linked. When this happens a new task ID number is inserted and I have found that previous dependencies I had set up are now linked incorrectly because the numbers have changed. Is there a way t
1) either get the linked task not to be inserted or 2) to not allow it to increase the task number (ie; use the same task # as being linked from) to avoid the problem with the numbers changing and the old links now being invalid
Thank

Hello Chris,

Well, when you create a link between 2 tasks in 2 different projects, MS
Project displays the "External Predecessor" and/or the "External successor"
as grey bars.
NB : you can change this behavior by the following : Tools / Options / View
/ Show external predcessor....
Anyway, as when you insert any task, all the following task ID are
incremented, but all the Predecessors # are also incremented the same way.
So the logical dependancies are not disturbed ! Fortunatly the old links are
still valid !

Hi,

If you want an ID numbering system that never changes, then insert the
Unique ID column. There are also Unique Predecessors and Unique Successors
columns.
