Linking text within a document

How do I link text from within the document to other areas
within the document? For example, at the top I may have
the names of all 50 states. If you "click" on that name
it will take you within the document that tells the
history of that state.

There are two ways to do this:

1. The manual way: insert a bookmark at the beginning of the section on each
state. At the top of the document, insert cross-references to those
bookmarks as hyperlinks.

2. The easy way: use headings for the sections and generate a TOC based on
them. Each TOC entry is automatically hyperlinked to the corresponding
section; in Word 2000 and above, you don't even have to have page numbers;
the entries themselves are hyperlinked. In Word 97 and earlier only the page
numbers are hyperlinked. For more, see "Create a table of contents" in
Word's Help.
