linking to another workbook

Hope this is the right group to post to.

In Excel 2000 I am linking one workbook to another.
I have a summary workbook that displays some cells from a
detail workbook.

The path that is displayed in the summary workbook is not
correct so I navigate to the correct file but the path
doesn't change! I end up copying a correct one and
pasting over the incorrect one.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? I
have about 1200 to do.
