Linking to dbase(V) file - unexpected error

I receive an error when trying to link dbase(5) file
(.dbf) in Access 2000. The error is:
External table is not in the expected format.

Do I need to install a BDE? If so, where can I find it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
