Linking to Excel data source

Hi,

I've seen a few threads about this but none answering my specific question,
so hopefully someone can help.

I've got some charts in Powerpoint that I've linked to Excel data sources
using Copy > Paste link. However Powerpoint is not automatically updating
these slides when I open Ppt. Instead I must go to the slide in question and
double click on the chart before it will update from the excel data.

I'm using Ppt 2003. Does anyone know a way I can get around this? What I
really want is Ppt updating all slides as soon as I open Ppt.

Thanks for the reply Steve.

I'm starting to see that using excel charts would be a somewhat easier way
to go! However we do have a load of presentations already that have the
charts made up in Ppt so converting them all to excel in one go would be a
another job. It may be that we have to convert going forward and put up with
the existing ones in Ppt for now.

I found a great add-in here;

http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00025.htm

by Ppt MVP Shyam Pillai that will go through and update the links just as
the macro you're describing would. Well worth a look for anyone having a
similar problem.

Now my next problem is finding a similar solution for breaking all the links
in my presentations..

It would probably be better to link to charts IN Excel than to create links
from MSGraph charts to Excel data. If you link directly to Excel charts,
then PPT will offer to update them automatically when you open the
presentation.

Otherwise, I think there's a VBA example on http://skp.mvps.org that
explains how to update all of the OLE links in a presentation. That'd still
force you to run the macro manually after opening the presentation, though.
