Linking to Powerpoint

B

Ben

Getting on famously with David Bartosik's help. I'm now
at the stage where I need to create a link in my homepage
to a powerpoint presentation. I'm using Pub 2003 (and
before David asks me , I have sent you a copy for
evaluation)
I have 4 questions because I'm not having luck getting
the link to work.

1) In Powerpoint I have 2 options to publish to the web ,
either as a single page or as separate pages (htm). Which
should I choose.
I also have the choice to organise in folders or not.
Your advice when publishing from PUBLISHER is to choose
NO. Does the same apply in Powerpoint

2) Are the path and filename case sensitive.

3)Should I create a separate sub directory on Tripod's
site to accomodate the powerpoint file.

4)Assuming the sub directory on Tripod.com is called
PowerpointFiles and the actual ppt file is called
futures.mht what should the hyperlink in my publisher
file say exactly i.e should it include the full path
including the http link to tripod?

I think that'll be enough to be getting on with
THANK YOU

thanks. I've gotten more than time has allowed me at the moment ;-)

You want the latter, that will create a web site of the full document with
links between slides. It'll be a fully functional site ready to go much as
Publisher does.

I also have the choice to organise in folders or not.
Your advice when publishing from PUBLISHER is to choose
NO. Does the same apply in Powerpoint

It's an organizational thing only. I recommend against it in Publisher
because my experience has been that most beginners have trouble with the
concept. So the pages don't loaded, they don't know where the files are,
etc. If you understand the concept and understand how to plan a structure
and how to link within the structure than by all means feel free to do
whichever option you prefer. You can be as structured or not as you like and
can maintain.

2) Are the path and filename case sensitive.

This is not relevant to a program. It is specific to the operating system.
Windows IS NOT case sensitive. On a Windows PC or a Windows server - you
cannot have "MyPage.htm" and "mypage.htm" in the same folder. And even you
named the file "MyPage.htm" it would load by typing "mypage.htm".
Unix (Linux, Redhat, SCO, AIX) IS case sensitive. So on a Unix server
(Apache) the files "Index.htm" and "index.htm" are two different files that
co-exist just fine. Most web hosts run Apache and most hosts put you on
Apache by default, you have to ask for Windows hosting.
It is the recommended practice and the common practice in web design to
strictly use lower-case naming. This way neither you nor the site visitor
has to remember when to capital and when not to. Also do not use spaces, if
you must use a long file name and you feel you must break it up than use the
underscore - "my_page_name_here_is_to_long.htm"

3)Should I create a separate sub directory on Tripod's

see my answer in Q1

if you are using an .mht that is a single web page with the elements
embedded. note that not all browsers support the mht file format. if you
want a slide show you want the web site option. in that case you name the
home page of the site. you can call it futures.htm in which case the url to
load it would be

http://www.myurlontripodthattheygaveme.com/powerpointfiles/futures.htm

or you could set it to index IF you load it to a separate folder and then
the url would be simply

http://www.myurlontripodthattheygaveme.com/powerpointfiles

this is because in any "folder" the file 'index.htm' is looked for by
default and need not be specified.
