Linking within a document

I would like to know the steps to follow to "link" the titles of the 50
States in alphetibitical order with the 50 states names, with in a
document.
I am using each states name as a title and then, under the name of the
state, I list certain products for sale.
If you live in say Alabama, you would only be interested in looking
under the listing for Alabama. But if you live in New York, you can look
there quickly by linking the names.
How do I do this please?

Hello Dale,

I'm not sure what you mean by "linking" the titles in alphabetical order,
but I'll guess that your document already contains the titles of the 50
states -- not in alphabetical order, or you wouldn't have a problem -- and
you already have text under each of those headings.

Assuming this, and that you have applied a heading style to the state
headings, go to View menu -> Outline, then select all the text that's
displayed in that view, then Table menu -> Sort. The document will be sorted
in alphabetical order of headings, and the text that appears under each
heading will stay with its own heading.

If the headings are not in a heading style (e.g. they might be emboldened
Normal), first apply a heading style to the first one, then arrow-key
downwards and hit Option-Return every time you come to another heading.

On looking again at your question, it occurs to me that your ref to
"linking" could mean you want a table of contents that would list the states
so you could click on to an entry and be taken to the appropriate page. With
heading styles applied as above, click at the front of the document then
choose Insert menu -> Index and Tables -> "Table of Contents" tab.

* If anyone is still reading down this far, here's a question: is it time
for you to back up your Normal template and all your Word settings? (This
should be on a medium other than the internal hard drive and, to protect
against theft and fire, stored in a different building.)

Study "Hyperlinks" and "Bookmarks" and "Cross-References" in the Help. One
of them will do what you want. I can't quite tell from your description
what you want to do, but I think you need Hyperlinks.

Cheers
