Links between documents resetting autonumbers

I have a document that is a list of references that are numbered. I
need to cross reference the items in this list from within another
document. When I paste the copied section as a link in my second
document the numbering is reset but the text is linked??? How can I get
word to maintain the numbering from the original list?
