links deleted converting from Access 97 to Access 2003

I opened an Access 97 database in Access 2003 and selected the Convert option - no errors were reported. I re-opened the database and the links to the associated data lookup database had been deleted. I recreated the links manually using File/External Data/Links and that appeared to work. I closed and reopened the database and the links had once more been deleted. HELP PLEASE
