Links don't update from closed workbooks. Receive #VALUE! error.

I'm using Excel 2002. I have one workbook that has links to many files. The
destination workbook and all the source files are located in the same
directory of the same server.

When I open the file and select "update", I receive #VALUE! errors.
However, when I concurrently open the source files, the destination file
links then update.

I have checked the status of all the links and they report OK.

Any suggestions on how I can get the destination file to update without
having to open the source files?
