Links Excel-Powerpoint

Jay

I am currently creating a powerpoint presentation which would be linked
to an Excel spreadsheet.

The problem I face is that I would like that the PPT presentation
automatically refreshes when the data in the Excel spreadsheet changes.
My idea is maybe pretty simple, but I d like to have a table in my PPT
which is the copy of the one in Excel and have it automatically
refreshed when the data in Excel changes.

Is it possible to do that ? I tried to download the PPT Merge program
but it didn't work for a MAC.
Do I have to use a Macro ?

Thanx in advance for your help.

Hi. Glad you found your way here ... I was going to email you to suggest this
newsgroup anyhow.

As near as I can tell, Mac PPT (at least through version X) doesn't support
linking, only embedding, from spreadsheets.

In order for updates to happen automatically, you need to be able to link to
external data.

I hope someone else has a better answer for you!

Hi Jay-

As usual Steve is correct... In fact, PPt *2004* doesn't support Workbook
links, either. Go Figure!!! But here's how you may be able to 'fool' it -
not extensively tested, but seems to work OK:

Create & Save a new workbook file, copy what you want to link to from the
original and Paste as Link in the new file (or create Formula Links if you
prefer, it works out the same way).

In PPt use the Insert>Object command and insert the _new_ workbook as the
Object.

Whenever you need to update the link, double-click the PPt Object, which
will open in Excel. Then use the Edit>Links dialog box to update the link.
When you go back to your slide it should be updated... At least as far as
cell content.

Unfortunately, however, *cell formatting* doesn't carry over from the
original to the embedded object and MacXL doesn't have the Paste>Special
Format option, but that's OK.

For the formatting, select the area in the original while you have the
object open, then click the Format Painter button. Bring the object workbook
to the foreground and apply your formatting with the Format Painter tool.
